Interview : Wexi Korhonen

Do you remember when you first decided to become a writer?
Already as a child. I started to write my first "book" already at the age of 15. I still have all my writings from that time in my files.

Was it an easy choice to make?
It was instinctive and the only option in my life.

What writers did have a major influence in your work / life?
I do not plan very much. I let inctincts to guide my writing. This way of working sometimes guides me to a wrong track and gets me work for nothing but it is also most rewarding when everything goes right.

What are the positive and negative aspects of being a writer in Finland?
The positive features are appreciation and respect I receive. From the negative perspective Finland's linquistical area is small, and therefore sales volumes do not go high. That's why a lack of money is somewhat everyday life for an author in Finland.

What are the themes that you like to explore in your books?
Multiple layers of a plot. Character description.

How could you define your style?
From the feedback I have received it is an individual perspective, and genuineness in character description.

Have you ever considered the possibilty to totally change your style?
I have planned to write prose after detective stories.

How do you write? Do you try to follow some strict rules or do you only
write "when it comes"?
Usually I write for three weeks' time and then rest a week. I think I am a little bit "when it comes" type. I simply cannot force myself to write if I am not in that mood. I write when it runs smoothly.

When you're working on a book, what is the stage / moment that you prefer?
Early in the morning writing goes on well.

What books or authors have you read recently?
Seitsemän Veljestä by Aleksis Kivi.

If there is one...what is your favorite book? For what reasons?
Seitsemän Veljestä by Aleksis Kivi. I never get tired of that book.

How do you consider Internet as an author?
OK.

Do you think that Internet could somehow change the traditional publication
process?
I do not believe that. A traditional book will always keep its place and form.

What are your actual and future projects?
I will write sixth book for Salo detective story series, it will be published in autumn 2004.
