Interview : Matti from Goodnight Monsters

When and how was your band created?
In the year 2004 me and Valtteri just decided to form a band. Things just happened.

Where is the name of the band coming from?
Well, one Pillows' song called "Blues Drive Monster" maybe had something to do with it. We threw ideas around and "Goodnight Monsters" sounded good.

What musicians or artists did have a major influence in your life / work?
Flaming Lips, Brian Wilson, Neil Young...I think that's top three for me.

What are the positive and negative aspects of being a musician in Finland?
We're getting better reviews from abroad than from Finland but I don't know why.

How could you define your style of music?
Colorful, fun, whimsical

During the years how has your musical style changed?
I think it changes on every song.

How do explain these changes?
I don't want to stuck to some particular category.

What are topics you treat in your songs?
Goodnight Monsters can sing about anything. So far we have treated topics like war, music biz, girls, ecological and economical issues...

What is your favorite song in your repertoire and why?
Maybe "Demonstrator" because it's a punk song and fun to play live - lots of feedback and odd soloing. I also like its album version with all the "hidden messages" etc.

Do you actually prefer performing your music live or in a studio?
I really like both. It's as fun to build beatiful songs with all the different layers in the studio as to play straightforward and loud live music.

During the process of making a song, what is the moment that you prefer?
I hunt good melodies and when I find one, that feels great and relieving.

A stupid question but... what is among all the songs you've been listening in your life the BEST song?
"Stuck Inside Of A Mobile With A Memphis Blues Again" by Bob Dylan.

What is your opinion, as a musician, regarding internet?
It's now easier to distribute music worldwide and that's good.

What are your projects?
We're now doing some gigs and we'll start to record new album soon.

What "image" do you have of French music?
Beatiful, melodic music.

Is there one French song that you prefer? If so, what song is it?
At the moment it's "Bonnie And Clyde" by Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot.
